Ice cream parlour hit with homophobic abuse after visit

An ice cream parlour in Devon was subjected to homophobic abuse online after it shared photos of a visit by two married LGBTQ+ influencers. Taste of Sidmouth posted pictures of Nick and Ant enjoying their homemade gelato, including Ferrero Rocher and strawberry flavours, but the post attracted offensive comments about the couple's relationship.

Owner Condemns Remarks

The shop condemned the remarks and said it had removed the worst comments from its page. Owner Cathy Inglis expressed shock and disappointment, noting that in 2026 some people still think it is acceptable to make nasty, homophobic remarks simply because two men are in a relationship.

Inglis described Nick and Ant as genuinely lovely men who supported a small family business and were incredibly kind, giving the shop a moment they were excited to share. She said the negativity was unexpected and added that being a decent human being should not be too much to ask.

Overwhelming Support

Sophie, the manager and daughter of the owner, said the response to their posts over the last 12 hours had been absolutely overwhelming. She noted the love, support, and hundreds of people standing up for kindness, and said many people thanked them for speaking out.

Sophie said speaking out against homophobia should not be extraordinary but should be the bare minimum. She credited her mother with instilling the values behind the business, describing Cathy as someone who encouraged the family to be accepting, outspoken and protective of others.

Commitment to Inclusion

Taste of Sidmouth, which was voted best ice cream in the south west, decorates its premises with rainbow flags for Pride Month every June. The business has pledged to continue calling out homophobia, celebrating Pride Month, and supporting the LGBTQ+ community.

The shop also had a message for Nick and Ant, assuring them they would always be welcome. The business said Taste of Sidmouth is a place for everyone, adding: "Always has been. Always will be."
