Woman charged after hotel evacuated over unknown substance

A 44-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with breach of the peace after a hotel in Dalbeattie was evacuated over containers with an unknown substance.

Incident on Maxwell Street

Emergency services were called to a premises on Maxwell Street in Dalbeattie, Dumfries and Galloway, shortly after 2pm on Monday, August 17. Police cordoned off the area around the Maxwell Arms, and the premises, understood to be the hotel, was evacuated as a precaution.

Containers with an unknown substance were found. There was no risk to the wider public.

Arrest and charge

Police have since confirmed that the woman was later traced and arrested and charged in connection with the incident. She will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

A statement from Police Scotland reads: "A 44-year-old woman has been arrested and charged in connection with a breach of the peace following an incident in Dalbeattie."

The statement continues: "Around 2.05pm on Monday, 17 August, 2026, emergency services were called to attend a premises on Maxwell Street after containers with an unknown substance were found."

"The premises was evacuated as a precaution however returned to normal a short time later. There was no risk to the wider public."

"A 44-year-old woman was later traced and arrested and charged in connection with the incident. She will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal."
