Play was suspended during the Magic Weekend clash between St Helens and Wigan Warriors after Nathan Lowe appeared to lose consciousness following an injury. Lowe had been putting in an impressive shift in only his second Super League outing for the Cherry and Whites, but his afternoon was cut short just before the break at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Incident Details
The young winger was bundled into touch by a group of Saints players and as they moved away, it quickly became apparent that Lowe had suffered a serious-looking leg injury. Medical staff rushed to his aid and eventually helped him to his feet to escort him down the tunnel. However, as they guided Lowe along the touchline, the Wigan man appeared to faint.
Paramedics hurried to his assistance and helped him back upright, but Lowe appeared to lose consciousness once again and had to be laid down close to the touchline, reports All Out Rugby League. Referee Chris Kendall ultimately halted play due to Lowe's condition, and several minutes elapsed before the closing moments of the first half could be completed, with Lowe placed on a stretcher and taken down the tunnel.
Cause of Fainting
Broadcaster Sky Sports subsequently confirmed that Lowe had experienced a drop in blood pressure as he was assisted from the pitch, which ultimately caused him to pass out. National World reporter Drew Darbyshire took to social media to offer the view from the stands of the incident. He wrote: "Looks pretty grim for Wigan youngster Nathan Lowe. He is assisted from the field by a couple of members of staff after landing awkwardly. Sad blow for the young winger, who came in to replace Noah Hodkinson for this game."
Other Injuries and Match Context
Clark was also taken off the field on a stretcher after spending several minutes on the side-lines. He was not the first player to leave the pitch after an injury. Daryl Clark and Ethan Havard had both left the field for head injury assessments shortly before the incident involving Lowe occurred. At the time the Warriors and Saints were locked in an entertaining game at the Brick Community Stadium. Saints took the lead after Jackson Hastings contributed a penalty goal after 13 minutes.
However, it was the home side who got the first try of the match. Adam Keighran got the first try of the game when he made a late dart down the right-hand side and received a perfectly timed pass from Jack Farrimond.
