Marc Guehi has revealed that Jordan Henderson is 'on the road to recovery' after suffering a freak wrist injury that will rule him out of the remainder of the World Cup. The England defender said the incident left the whole squad 'scared', but Henderson is now in a better place and determined to stay with the team to offer his support.
Henderson's freak injury
Henderson broke his wrist while climbing back over advertising boards to celebrate with travelling fans following England's win over Mexico. The 36-year-old midfielder was carried out of the stadium on a stretcher, required oxygen, and was rushed to hospital in Mexico City. He will undergo surgery and miss the rest of the tournament, a heartbreaking outcome for the veteran who earned his 90th cap in the group stage against Panama, becoming the only men's player to appear in four World Cups.
Guehi's update on Henderson
Speaking on the FA's Lions' Den show, Guehi said: 'Hendo's good, man. Hendo's in a better place than he was yesterday, and it was obviously scary for him and his family and for everyone else, but we're just glad that he's on the road to speedy recovery.' Henderson is keen to remain with the squad in Kansas City to provide support, despite his limited minutes on the pitch.
Team recovery and focus
England boss Thomas Tuchel has given the players two days off, with family and friends invited into the camp. Guehi stressed the importance of disconnecting: 'The most important thing is to disconnect from every single thing possible. Some lads like to play golf, some lads like to go into the city if they've got time and explore. That part is really important to make sure that when you come back, you are super focused.'
