Former River City actor Iain Robertson has been jailed for nine years after raping one woman and abusing two others over a 15-year period. The 45-year-old, who played Stevie O'Hara in the BBC Scotland soap, was convicted of five offences, including rape, sexual assault and domestic abuse, committed between 2004 and 2019.
Sentencing Robertson at the High Court in Edinburgh, Lady Drummond ordered him to serve nine years in prison, placed him on the sex offenders register indefinitely and imposed lifelong non-harassment orders to protect his victims. Prosecutors said Robertson subjected the women to years of violence, coercive and controlling behaviour, leaving them with lasting trauma.
Police officer was serial rapist
A Scottish police officer who preyed on vulnerable women for more than a decade has been unmasked as a suspected serial rapist after a major anti-corruption investigation. PC Alan Greer, who joined Strathclyde Police in 2009, is believed to have raped a woman who had called officers for help before attacking at least eight more women, including five sex workers, over a 14-year period.
Greer was arrested in April as part of one of Police Scotland's biggest ever anti-corruption inquiries but took his own life the following month before he could be charged. Detectives say they have identified nine alleged victims and believe more may come forward as the investigation continues.
Teen charged after firearm scare at Glasgow shopping centre
An 18-year-old man has been charged after armed police swooped on Glasgow city centre following reports of a man carrying what appeared to be a firearm. Officers raced to the St Enoch Centre on Wednesday evening after the alarm was raised near the Monterey Jack's restaurant. Police recovered a BB gun and arrested the teenager. No one was injured and no shots were fired during the incident. The accused is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court after being charged in connection with the incident.
Delivery rider tracks down alleged bike thief using AirTag
A food delivery driver chased down an alleged bike thief after tracking his stolen e-bike across Glasgow using an AirTag. Vikas Dahiya, 27, spotted his bike being stolen while making a delivery and immediately alerted nearby police before using the tracking app to follow its location. When officers caught up with the suspect, Vikas sprinted over and tackled the man until police took over. His bike was recovered, although it had been damaged. Police Scotland said a 46-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with the theft, with a report submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
Fresh probe call over Jimmy Savile's visits to Scottish school
A former detective who exposed Jimmy Savile as a prolific sex offender has called for a fresh investigation into the disgraced TV star's activities in Scotland. Mark Williams-Thomas spoke out after the Daily Record uncovered a 1969 school magazine interview in which Savile made what he described as 'red-flag' comments to schoolgirls during a visit to Lochaber High School in Fort William. The former detective said the revelations should be a 'wake-up call' and urged authorities to examine whether any concerns or allegations linked to Savile's visits to the area were never properly investigated. Police Scotland said it would treat any reports of historical sexual offences seriously, regardless of how much time has passed.
