South Sydney Rabbitohs hooker Brandon Smith has been charged with allegedly supplying dangerous drugs and using or disclosing inside knowledge for betting, Queensland Police confirmed on Monday.
The 29-year-old New Zealand international was issued a summons on 20 August and is set to appear at Southport Magistrates Court on 18 September. Police said investigations by detectives from the Organised Crime Gangs Group, Taskforce Maxima, are continuing.
Smith was previously questioned by police upon arriving at Coolangatta Airport ahead of the Rabbitohs' 10 August clash with the Gold Coast Titans. He was released without charge and played in that match.
Acting Police Commissioner Shane Chelepy stated on 14 August that Smith was cooperative during questioning and was allowed to proceed to play. South Sydney confirmed they are aware of the allegations and have informed the NRL integrity unit, but declined further comment.
Smith, a former Dally M Hooker of the Year and 2020 premiership winner with Melbourne, joined Souths mid-season from the Sydney Roosters. He has been limited to four games due to injury and is contracted until 2027.
