Former Arsenal academy footballer Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has been sentenced to four years in prison for his role in a £600,000 cannabis smuggling plot. The 34-year-old striker recruited his girlfriend and her friend to transport the drugs from Thailand to the UK, believing they were importing gold.
National Crime Agency officers seized approximately 60kg of cannabis at Stansted Airport after the two women arrived on a flight from Bangkok via Dubai. Emmanuel-Thomas, who had recently signed for Scottish Championship side Greenock Morton, was arrested in Gourock, Inverclyde, in September 2024 and subsequently sacked by the club.
At Chelmsford Crown Court, the court heard that Emmanuel-Thomas was facing financial difficulties after a period out of contract, which led to what his defence called a 'catastrophic error of judgment'. He had been paid £5,000 for his involvement in the plot, which included arranging business-class flights, hotel stays on the Thai island of Ko Samui, and coaching the women via messages.
Emmanuel-Thomas, who also played for Ipswich Town, Bristol City, Queens Park Rangers, Livingston, Aberdeen, and Thai side PTT Rayong, pleaded guilty to fraudulent evasion of the prohibition on the importation of cannabis. Judge Mills told him: 'It's through your own action that you will no longer be known for playing professional football. You will be known as a criminal.'
The two women, Yasmin Piotrowska and Rosie Rowland, were not charged after prosecutors accepted they believed they were importing gold. Emmanuel-Thomas's girlfriend, Piotrowska, wept in the public gallery during the hearing.
