Bulgarian siblings sentenced over Dundee axe knife attack

Ilia Belov, 23, has been placed on the sex offenders register for 18 months after assaulting a 12-year-old girl and behaving in a threatening or abusive manner towards four other girls aged between 12 and 14 in Dundee. His sister, Nadjedzha Belova, 20, was ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work for assaulting a 13-year-old girl during the same incident.

Sentencing at Dundee Sheriff Court

Belov was sentenced on Friday at Dundee Sheriff Court to 18 months of supervision and 300 hours of unpaid work. His name was also added to the sex offenders register for 18 months. Belova had pleaded guilty to one charge of assaulting a 13-year-old girl during the incident, which took place in the Lochee area of the city in August 2025.

Court rejects Belov's account

Sheriff Timothy Niven-Smith rejected Belov's version of events, describing it as “neither credible nor reliable”. During the trial, Belov claimed he had pushed the girl to protect his sister after seeing she had a knife hidden under her T-shirt. The sheriff described his evidence as “wholly unconvincing and self-serving”.

Belov said he had been with his father on the way to buy cigarettes when he passed a group of young girls walking in the other direction, and one of the girls made “disrespectful” remarks to him. However, the court heard that Belov made sexual remarks to a 12-year-old as she walked towards a bus stop with other girls.

Victim's testimony and aftermath

Giving evidence by videolink, the girl, now 14, recalled: “He kept saying, ‘come here sexy. I will show you how to have a good time’.” She said his words made her feel “dead angry”, and she turned around and began shouting at him. Belov then phoned his sister, who arrived shortly afterwards and began attacking a 13-year-old member of the group.

In the ensuing fracas, Belov pushed the 12-year-old, who told the court she hit her head on a metal handrail as she fell to the ground. After standing back up, she pulled out an axe and knife she said had been hidden in her waistband for five to 10 minutes before the incident. When police arrived minutes later, the girl said she dumped the weapons on a nearby roundabout, where they were later recovered by officers.

Belov denied having made sexualised remarks to the girls, telling the court they had been saying derogatory things to him, including calling him a “f****** migrant”.

A spokesperson for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) said: “Ilia Belov and Nadjedzha Belova have now been prosecuted and convicted for their actions. Scotland’s independent prosecution service carefully considers all reports of alleged criminal conduct submitted by the police. Criminal proceedings will be raised where reports contain sufficient evidence of a crime and where it is appropriate and in the public interest to do so.”
