Police were called on Tuesday evening after a one-year-old child was spotted walking alone across a road in Huntingdon without any shoes. The incident occurred at approximately 19:00 GMT, prompting immediate concern from a member of the public who stayed with the child until officers arrived.
Cambridgeshire Police said the child was wet and cold from the rain and was not wearing shoes. Officers began knocking on doors in the local area to locate the parents and, after a short time, found the child's home nearby. The toddler was safely returned to their family.
In a Facebook post, police in the Huntingdonshire district described how a very concerned member of the public had found the child in the street with no parents nearby. The officers issued strong words of advice to the parents on this occasion, according to the force.
Authorities have completed a child protection referral, which will ensure that appropriate agencies are made aware of the incident. Cambridgeshire Police confirmed that the relevant safeguarding procedures have been followed and that the child's welfare is being monitored.
The case has been handed over to partner agencies for any necessary follow-up, as officers stressed the importance of supervising young children, particularly near busy roads and in adverse weather conditions.
