A respected children's therapist from Surrey stands accused of conducting a bizarre poisoning campaign against her former husband, allegedly lacing his food with powerful prescription laxatives over several months.
Emily Carter, 42, who worked with vulnerable students at a local school, was arrested following a police investigation into her ex-husband's mysterious illness that left him repeatedly hospitalised.
The Unravelling of a Secret Campaign
According to court documents, the victim began experiencing severe gastrointestinal distress in early 2023, with symptoms becoming so debilitating that he required multiple hospital admissions. Doctors were initially baffled by his condition until suspicious family members raised concerns about possible tampering with his food.
Police investigation revealed that Carter had allegedly been crushing prescription-strength laxative medication and secretly adding it to meals she prepared for her former partner. The couple had separated but were attempting to maintain civil relations for the sake of their children.
From Healer to Suspect
The case has sent shockwaves through the local community where Carter was known as a dedicated mental health professional working with children experiencing emotional and behavioural difficulties. Colleagues described her as "compassionate" and "highly competent" in her role supporting young people.
One parent, who asked not to be named, expressed disbelief: "She was always so gentle with the children and seemed completely professional. This is utterly shocking if true."
Legal Proceedings Begin
Carter appeared at Guildford Magistrates' Court facing charges of administering a noxious substance with intent to injure, aggrieve, or annoy. The prosecution alleges the poisoning occurred between March and August 2023.
The defendant has been released on conditional bail and suspended from her position pending the outcome of the case. She is due to appear at Crown Court next month where she is expected to enter a plea.
Legal experts note that if convicted, Carter could face a significant prison sentence given the breach of trust involved and the prolonged nature of the alleged offences.
