BBC Radio 5 Live presenter Nicky Campbell has apologised to BBC staff members after using a derogatory homophobic term during a work meeting. The veteran broadcaster, who has been with the BBC for nearly 40 years, used the word 'p***ter' several times while recounting an anecdote to colleagues.
Incident Details
According to reports, the incident occurred in a meeting with six editors present. Campbell was retelling a story in which someone else had used the offensive term. After becoming aware that some colleagues were offended, he issued a face-to-face apology to the entire team.
A source told the Daily Mail: 'At the time, about half the people were saying, "What the f***?", but others were laughing about it. But there's been a growing backlash since then. There are people who could be really offended by the comment.'
Campbell's Career at the BBC
Campbell began his BBC career in 1987 with Radio 1, then moved to BBC Radio 5 Live in 1997. He spent 20 years on the coveted Breakfast slot before leaving in 2021, joking he would 'get a bit more sleep'. His current weekday show, Your Call, airs from 9am to 11am.
Recent Family Incident
Last month, Campbell's 26-year-old daughter Lilla was rushed to hospital after being hit by an e-bike in Peckham, south London. She suffered severe injuries but was later discharged. Campbell shared on social media: 'My daughter Lilla was hit by an e bike hit and run last night in Peckham - hopefully there is CCTV. She is badly injured but now at home. It could have been so much worse. We are incredibly lucky.'
He added that at the hospital, a drunk man entered the trauma room and exposed himself to Lilla and her sisters. The man was arrested, and Campbell praised the police response.
