A newborn baby has been found dead at a flat in Sheffield, with seven people arrested on suspicion of murder.
South Yorkshire Police confirmed officers attended a property on Holywell Heights in the Wincobank area of the city at approximately 5.58am on Sunday morning, August 30. The response followed concerns raised by callers regarding the welfare of a newborn infant.
Investigation underway
Officers conducted a search of a property as part of their enquiries and subsequently discovered the child. Despite efforts by police and paramedics, the child was declared dead at the scene.
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Emma Knight said: "We are aware news of this will be deeply concerning and I want to reassure our local communities that we have a dedicated team of detectives and officers hard at work to ensure justice is secured for the baby girl at the heart of this investigation."
Seven arrested
Seven people have been arrested on suspicion of murder as part of the investigation. All of them remain in police custody at this time. Police are working to determine the ages of some of those arrested.
Detective Chief Inspector Knight added: "Our investigation is in its early stages and we would like to remind people to avoid speculating about this incident."
