Laurie Merriman, mother of nine-year-old Minnie Merriman, has thanked the people of Arbroath for their 'incredible support' during what she called the 'worst time of her life'. Her daughter died at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee on August 3 after being found seriously injured at Elliot Industrial Estate in Arbroath, where the family was camping.
Community shows support
Last week, locals lined the streets as a private ambulance carrying Minnie's body stopped at Victoria Park before travelling to Yorkshire for a private funeral. Laurie, surrounded by family, watched as bikers escorted the ambulance into the park and balloons were released.
On Saturday night, Laurie took to social media to thank the community. She revealed a local family gave her a place to stay, and Arbroath FC donated football tops to Minnie's little brothers. The club also held a minute's silence before their SPFL Championship match against Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
Mother's message of gratitude
Laurie said the kindness will stay with her as she 'fights for justice'. She said: "To the wonderful people of Arbroath and beyond, I want to thank you wholeheartedly for the incredible love and support you have shown me and my beautiful Minnie during the worst time of my life.
"To every person who came out for Minnie’s journey home, every biker, neighbour and stranger who stood with us — thank you. To the football club for your support and the Arbroath shirts for Minnie’s little brothers, the family who gave us a place to stay when we needed it most, and for the giant chocolate gifts that brought a smile to the boys’ little faces — I will never forget your kindness.
"Thank you also to every single person who donated and helped raise money in Minnie’s name. A huge thank you to the organisers and everyone involved in making it happen. The generosity shown to our family has been overwhelming and means more to us than we could ever put into words. The humanity and kindness carries me and will be with me every step of the way in my fight for justice for my Minnie."
Investigation and fundraiser
Three other family members were taken to hospital. Her father, Christopher Rice, 35, remains in custody after appearing at Forfar Sheriff Court charged with murder. Police Scotland are not looking for anyone else.
Days after her death, NHS Tayside was investigating a potential data breach after her health records were allegedly accessed by a staff member without permission or clinical need. The health board confirmed an internal investigation had been launched.
A GoFundMe to support Minnie's funeral has raised over £8,000. A statement from the fundraiser says donations will first go towards giving Minnie 'the very best possible funeral and farewell', with any remaining funds going to Laurie and the boys to help them through the difficult months ahead.
