A man has pleaded guilty to murdering his former wife, who was found stabbed to death on a quiet Cardiff street.
Guilty plea entered at crown court
Thisara Weragalage, 37, originally denied killing his 32-year-old ex-wife, Nirodha Niwunhella, but changed his plea at Newport Crown Court. Judge Daniel Williams has remanded him in custody ahead of sentencing on 20 February.
Weragalage had previously admitted to possessing a knife on the day of the fatal attack. The court heard how the tragedy unfolded in the Riverside area of Cardiff on 21 August last year.
A community left in shock
Emergency services were called to South Morgan Place at 7.37am after Nirodha was discovered with significant injuries. Paramedics rushed to the scene but were unable to save her, and she was pronounced dead between two parked cars.
The local community was described as 'shocked and saddened' by the violent death in their neighbourhood. One neighbour paid tribute, saying: 'She was such a beautiful woman. This is such a tragic waste of a young life full of promise.'
Family tribute to a 'cherished' life
Following her death, Nirodha's heartbroken family released a moving statement. They described her as a 'cherished daughter, family member and dear friend to many'.
The tribute continued: 'Nirodha will be forever remembered with peace, love and gratitude. She touched many lives with her kindness and warmth and her memory will continue to inspire us. Though her life ended too soon, the love she shared will always remain with us. Rest in peace angel.'
An inquest opening in Pontypridd heard that Nirodha was formally identified by a friend. Pathologist Dr Stephen Leadbeatter gave a provisional cause of death as multiple sharp force injuries.
Area coroner Patricia Morgan stated there was reason to suspect the death was 'violent or unnatural' and expressed her deepest condolences to the family and friends of Miss Niwunhella.
