Jill Biden's Former Husband William Stevenson Charged with Murder of Wife Linda
William Stevenson, the ex-husband of former US First Lady Jill Biden, has been arrested and charged with the murder of his wife, Linda Stevenson, according to official statements released on Tuesday. The 77-year-old was taken into custody on Monday following a grand jury indictment filed in Delaware, which accuses him of first-degree murder in connection with Linda's death.
Domestic Dispute Leads to Tragic Discovery
On 28 December 2025, officers from the New Castle County Division of Police responded to a reported domestic dispute at the Stevensons' residence. Upon arrival, they discovered Linda Stevenson unresponsive in the living room. Despite immediate efforts by officers to administer life-saving measures, they were unable to revive her.
In a press statement issued at the time, police confirmed that Linda Stevenson's body had been transferred to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science. An autopsy was conducted to determine the precise cause and manner of her death, which has now led to the murder charge against William Stevenson.
Historical Connection to Jill Biden
Dr Jill Biden, then known as Jill Tracy Jacobs, married William Stevenson in February 1970 when she was an 18-year-old student at the University of Delaware. The couple's marriage lasted for five years before they divorced. Jill Biden later met then-Senator Joe Biden in March 1975, eventually marrying him and becoming the First Lady of the United States.
This historical connection has brought significant public attention to the case, highlighting the personal ties between the accused and a prominent political figure.
Legal Proceedings and Custody Status
William Stevenson is currently being held at the Howard Young Correctional Institution after failing to post a $500,000 cash bail. The legal proceedings are ongoing, with the indictment marking a formal step in the prosecution process.
The Office of Joe and Jill Biden has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the charges against Stevenson. The case continues to develop as authorities pursue justice in this tragic incident.
