Husband Confesses To Bludgeoning Wife With Rock In 999 Call

A 71-year-old man has admitted killing his wife after calling 999 and confessing to the crime. David Maggs told a police call handler that he had bludgeoned Linda Maggs, 74, with a rock at their home in Pontypool, Torfaen, on 6 February 2021.

Maggs has pleaded guilty to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility but denies murder. The prosecution alleges that he intentionally killed his wife, who was in the process of divorcing him at the time of her death.

In the 999 call, played to jurors at Cardiff Crown Court, Maggs is heard saying: 'I just killed the wife.' Body cam footage released by Gwent Police shows him being arrested at the couple's home shortly after making the call.
