A 38-year-old man from Stafford has admitted causing the death of his three-month-old son, in a case described by police as truly tragic.
Father Admits Guilt in Court
Gareth Stark pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his baby son, Leon Stark, when he appeared at Birmingham Crown Court on Monday. He also admitted a separate charge of battery.
The court heard how the infant was taken to hospital on 12 October 2023 after falling unwell at a house in Stafford. Despite medical attention, Leon died eight days later from a head injury inflicted by his father.
A Tragic Case for Staffordshire Police
Following the hearing, Staffordshire Police issued a statement detailing the charges. Detective Inspector Lisa Holland, of the force's Major Investigations Department, commented on the profound impact of the case.
'This is a truly tragic case, and our thoughts remain with everyone affected by Leon's death,' said DI Holland. She emphasised the force's commitment to child protection, stating: 'We will continue to work with our partners to protect children from harm, safeguard them and prevent tragic cases like this one.'
Sentencing Awaited
Gareth Stark is now awaiting sentencing for his crimes. He is due to appear at Stafford Crown Court later this year, where a judge will determine his punishment.
The case serves as a sombre reminder of the vulnerabilities of infants and the critical importance of child safeguarding procedures within communities and partnerships.
