Federal authorities apprehended a 17-year-old suspect in Georgia on Monday, accused of opening fire near a popular University of Iowa nightlife district last month, leaving five people injured.
Arrest Details
Iowa City officials announced in a news release that U.S. marshals captured Damarian M. Jones, from Cedar Rapids, near Atlanta. He faces multiple charges, including five counts of attempted murder and five counts of assault. Jones is being held in the Clayton County Jail in Georgia pending an extradition hearing to Iowa. The release did not disclose how marshals tracked him down, the exact location of his arrest, or whether he resisted. It remains unclear if he has legal representation. Messages seeking additional details from the U.S. Marshals Office in Des Moines, Iowa City Police Department, and Johnson County Attorney Rachel Zimmerman Smith's office were not immediately returned.
Incident Overview
Police stated that Jones was involved in a large fight along a pedestrian mall lined with shops, bars, and restaurants near the Iowa campus shortly before 2 a.m. on April 19. During a break in the altercation, he allegedly fired six shots toward the crowd and fled the scene.
One victim was shot in the head, another in the arm and chest. Two more individuals sustained gunshot wounds to at least one leg, and a fifth person was struck in the stomach. Monday's news release indicated that one victim remains hospitalized, but it did not specify which one or provide further details on their condition.
