A 26-year-old man arrested on Friday on suspicion of murdering former Tory MP Ann Widdecombe has been released from custody and is no longer a suspect in the investigation. Devon & Cornwall Police stated that the arrest “formed part of a fast-moving investigation launched in response to the serious incident.”
Police Statement on the Investigation
Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said: “Our priority remains identifying those responsible and ensuring that all available evidence is thoroughly examined. Detectives continue to carry out numerous enquiries as part of the ongoing investigation and we remain committed to establishing the full circumstances surrounding the incident.”
At a press conference yesterday, police confirmed the man was arrested at an address in Newton Abbot on suspicion of murdering the 78-year-old former politician and Strictly Come Dancing star. The arrest followed the discovery of Widdecombe’s body at her home in nearby Haytor on Thursday morning; she had suffered serious injuries.
Political and Public Reaction
Following the news of her death, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed his shock, stating: “This is really shocking news, and my thoughts, I think all of our thoughts, will be with the family and friends of Ann Widdecombe at this awful time for them. Ann was a distinguished politician over many, many years with many achievements, and it’s a huge, huge loss.”
Widdecombe, who served as a Home Office minister under Michael Howard, famously fell out with him during her tenure, memorably declaring he had “something of the night about him.” She left the Commons in 2010 and later participated in the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing alongside Anton du Beke, reaching the semi-finals through public votes.
Tribute from Anton du Beke
Du Beke paid tribute to his former dance partner, saying: “I had the most brilliant time with Ann on Strictly Come Dancing. She became a real friend. She was fun. She was upbeat. She was positive. She was supportive. We had an incredible time together and we stayed firm friends. My thoughts go out to all of her nearest and dearest and all her family. This is a sad day and I’m devastated by the news of Ann’s passing but I shall remember her fondly, and miss her.”
