A man's severed head was found lying close to his burnt-out body in a quiet French village, prompting a homicide investigation and the arrest of four suspects.
The discovery was made at dawn on Thursday, August 27, near the banks of the Galaure River in Châteauneuf-de-Galaure, Drôme, a rural commune of about 1,800 people roughly 30km north-east of Valence.
Discovery and initial response
A source close to the investigation said: “The decapitated and partially burned body of a man was discovered Thursday in a field in a village in Drôme, and four people have been arrested.” The same source, confirming reporting by local daily Le Dauphiné Libéré, said the victim's head was found “close to the half-charred torso”.
The remains were reportedly spotted near an isolated, wooded path at the end of a dirt track along Route des Bayardières, on the boundary between Châteauneuf-de-Galaure and neighbouring Saint-Jean-de-Galaure. Forensic teams and gendarmes sealed off the area as technicians carried out detailed searches to determine whether the man was killed at the spot or dumped there later.
Victim identified and arrests made
The victim has been identified as a 34-year-old local man, born in 1990, described in local reports as living in extreme poverty and on the margins, according to 20 Minutes. He had been officially reported missing the previous day, Wednesday, August 26, under “worrying circumstances”.
The homicide inquiry has been handed to the investigative brigade of the Gendarmerie in Romans-sur-Isère, Midi Libre reported. Within hours of the grim find, officers arrested four people who were taken into custody, where they remained on Friday as questioning continued.
Investigation ongoing
At this stage, investigators have not publicly confirmed a motive. However, local reports say detectives are looking at the possibility that the killing followed a dispute linked to illegal activity, with one person in custody reportedly confessing involvement.
Fear and disbelief spread through the village as news emerged. One resident told local media: “We saw the criminal identification truck pass several times from the first hours of the morning… seeing the forensic police arrive in numbers here, you immediately understand something serious has happened.”
