Ratko Mladic, the Bosnian Serb military commander convicted of genocide and other war crimes, has died aged 84.
Conviction and sentence
Mladic was found guilty in 2017 by a United Nations tribunal of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, including the massacre of more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica in 1995. He was sentenced to life in prison.
Role in the Bosnian war
During the Bosnian war, Mladic commanded the Bosnian Serb army and was known as the 'Butcher of Bosnia'. His forces laid siege to Sarajevo and carried out ethnic cleansing campaigns across the country.
Death and aftermath
Mladic died in prison, where he was serving his life sentence. His death brings an end to one of the most significant war crimes cases in Europe since the Second World War. The tribunal's verdicts against him remain a landmark in international justice.
