At least 23 people were injured in a shooting at a campground party near Oklahoma City on Sunday evening, police have said. The incident occurred at Spring Creek Park on Arcadia Lake, about 15 miles north-east of downtown Oklahoma City, when gunfire erupted at around 9pm during a gathering of young people.
Emily Ward, a spokesperson for Edmond police, said no arrests had been made and that the heavily wooded site was hindering the search for evidence and a possible suspect. “This is obviously a very terrifying situation,” she said. “We’re kind of all over the metro speaking with victims and witnesses.”
Ten of the victims were taken to hospital by ambulance, while several others drove themselves. Officials at Integris Health and OU Health reported treating a total of 23 people in connection with the shooting. The Gun Violence Archive classified this as the 131st mass shooting in the US this year, defined as an incident with at least four victims injured or killed, not including the shooter.
A witness, Armani Kessee, told local media he had helped a female victim who was struck by a stray bullet. “It’s very sad to see someone that you know, that you love,” he said. Edmond, a suburb of Oklahoma City with about 100,000 residents, was previously the site of a deadly workplace shooting in 1986.
