Newcastle law courts evacuated after fire alarm

Newcastle Law Courts were evacuated this morning after a fire alarm sounded, with dozens of people gathering outside the building on the Quayside. The prominent structure houses both the Crown and Magistrates courts, and its pavement was crowded with those who had been inside.

Mass exodus from the courthouse

Photographs from the scene showed judges, staff, and members of the public standing outside, waiting for more information about the incident. A prison van was also seen waiting down the side road to enter while the evacuation was in progress.

The nature of the incident remains unclear, and it has not been confirmed whether the alarm was triggered by an actual fire. The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service control room confirmed that firefighters were not in attendance at the courts this morning.

No emergency services at the scene

Northumbria Police also said that its officers were not at the scene of the evacuation. The evacuation has now concluded, and those who had left the building have been allowed to return inside.

The Ministry of Justice and Newcastle Law Courts have been contacted for comment and further information.
