A newborn baby girl has been found dead in a flat in Sheffield, with seven people arrested on suspicion of murder.
Emergency services were called to a property on Holywell Heights in the Wincobank area at 5.58am on Sunday following reports of concern for the safety of a baby. Officers searched the flat, where the infant was discovered. Despite the efforts of paramedics, the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.
Seven arrested and in custody
Police have confirmed that seven people have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody. On Monday morning, several police vehicles were visible in the area, with an officer and cordon stationed near the flat. Forensics officers were also present, and police were seen searching the surrounding area.
Police appeal for information
In a statement released on Sunday, South Yorkshire Police confirmed the baby was pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of officers and paramedics, and that all seven individuals arrested remain in police custody.
Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Emma Knight said: "We are aware news of this will be deeply concerning and I want to reassure our local communities that we have a dedicated team of detectives and officers hard at work to ensure justice is secured for the baby girl at the heart of this investigation.
"As part of our investigation seven people have been arrested on suspicion of murder. All of them remain in police custody at this time. We are working to determine the ages of some of those arrested.
"Our investigation is in its early stages and we would like to remind people to avoid speculating about this incident."
