Thomas Markle Sr., the 82-year-old father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has appeared in court in Tampa, Florida, after being charged with possession of child sex abuse images, the United States Department of Justice said. The hearing lasted about 30 minutes, with federal prosecutor Courtenay Derry reading out the details of the charges, CBS reports. A later hearing was scheduled to decide whether Markle will remain in Florida or be transferred to California.

Arrest and Care Home Raid

Following his arrest, the Duchess of Sussex's father was seen being wheeled out of his care home wearing handcuffs. He was then placed on a stretcher and lifted into an ambulance, thought to be transferred to a detention facility.

The arrest of Mr Markle Sr. by the FBI came as his care home in Lakeland, Florida, was raided after an unspecified amount of indecent material was discovered at locations connected to Mr Markle in the Philippines and Mexico in recent weeks. The alleged possession of child abuse material reportedly included images of Mr Markle with young girls. Shortly before his arrest, Mr Markle had relocated to the senior-living home, which specialises in dementia care and costs an estimated $3,900 per month.

Investigation and Seized Items

The investigation into Mr Markle Sr. was launched after his son, Thomas Markle Jr., claimed he had found a collection of images belonging to their father at his former home in the Philippines, where he briefly lived and had his left leg partially amputated. A second hoard was reportedly discovered last week in a storage unit that Mr Markle is said to have rented near his former home in Rosarito, Mexico, during a police raid.

Federal agents in the US arrived at the 82-year-old's Maravida Senior Living care home in Lakeland, Florida, with it being reported that Mr Markle was arrested for possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Mr Markle Sr. has vehemently denied possessing child sex abuse images.

Official Statements

First assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli said: “Mr Markle is accused of possessing child sexual abuse material, including photographs depicting himself with minor girls. These allegations are extremely serious, and we will prosecute Mr Markle to the fullest extent of federal law.”

FBI director Kash Patel said: “The FBI and our partners have arrested Thomas Markle Sr after an FBI investigation revealed he was in possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Mr Markle allegedly targeted innocent children and sought to steal their innocence through his criminal actions.

“Working with our Justice Department partners, our agents moved quickly, identified and located the explicit material, and arrested Mr Markle in Florida.

“This FBI will use every single resource at our disposal to protect innocent kids – any predator who targets children will have zero safe haven in this country or anywhere they try to hide.

“Thank you to FBI Los Angeles, FBI Tampa, our Mexico and Marshall Islands Law Enforcement Attaches, and our partners who executed quickly in this case.”

Acting on warrants, FBI agents searched two storage units in LA registered to Markle and which he had rented since 2008, with his most recent payments on both made last month by auto-pay. Inside the units, agents seized approximately 78 items, including slides, film negatives, and books that contained suspected child sex abuse material.

Two of the images allegedly depict an adult man – whom a witness identified as Markle – with a nude young girl. A third is said to show a nude young girl in a room that appears to be part of a motel chain in the Philippines. Other photographs allegedly show Markle with children in various stages of undress. If convicted, Mr Markle would face at least 20 years in federal prison.

Meghan's Response

The Duchess of Sussex said in a statement that she was made aware of "disturbing allegations" about her father in 2018 and was assured they were being investigated. Sources said that Meghan wanted to speak out about the allegations when she learned of them, but was advised not to. She has been estranged from her father since before her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018.

Meghan, who moved back to the UK with Harry and their two children in August, revealed she was sent a letter in 2019 by the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection containing "troubling and disturbing allegations" about her father, but that she was given assurances that they were being investigated. The Met has admitted it never shared the details with other law enforcement agencies, with the police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), now investigating the force's conduct.

The Duchess had wanted to "speak out" immediately after reading the letter, but police advised her against this, sources said. The Duchess of Sussex is yet to comment on her father's arrest. A representative for the Sussexes has been contacted for comment.
