A man killed his newly discovered biological father in a pub beer garden just hours after learning the truth about their relationship, a court has heard.
Martin Greensmith, 37, pushed Steven Shevels, 61, to the ground outside the Queen's Head pub in Willington, County Durham, on Christmas Eve last year. Mr Shevels struck his head on the concrete and later died from his injuries.
Guilty verdict after trial
Greensmith admitted the push but denied manslaughter. Following a seven-day trial at Teesside Crown Court, he was found guilty. Jurors heard that he had only discovered Mr Shevels was his biological father earlier that day, shortly before the fatal confrontation.
Police were called to the pub at around 4.45pm. Durham Constabulary detailed how "shortly after" receiving this revelation, Greensmith had been in the beer garden with Mr Shevels when he pushed him, causing the 61-year-old to strike his head on the concrete ground.
Arrest and investigation
Despite initially being amongst those who tried to assist Mr Shevels, Greensmith departed the premises before emergency services could arrive. He was apprehended the following day - Christmas Day - at his Willington home, with police stating that analysis of his mobile phone revealed he'd been looking up "involuntary manslaughter" and seeking out solicitors.
Speaking after the trial, Mr Shevels' sister Angela said: "My brother Steven was the victim of an unprovoked act of violence that took his life far too soon. His passing has left a hole in all our hearts, and a future forever changed for all of his family, friends, and everyone who knew him."
Family tributes and sentencing
Det Ch Insp Alfie Keane, of Durham Constabulary, who headed the investigation, commented: "This is a truly devastating case. It shows how split-second decisions can have life-long consequences and an unimaginable impact on everyone around them. Our thoughts remain with Steven's family and friends at this difficult time."
A prior tribute from the family stated: "We are heartbroken to announce the tragic death of Steven, who was taken from us far too soon. He will be deeply missed by all of his family and friends."
Greensmith is due to be sentenced at Teesside Crown Court on October 21 this year.
