The suspect, who is Sudanese, faces charges of attempted murder, possession of a bladed article in a public place, and making threats to kill. He is scheduled to appear at Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Victim's Condition

The victim, aged in his 40s, remains in a serious condition in hospital, receiving treatment for severe wounds to his eye, face, and back. The attack occurred on Monday night in the Kinnaird Avenue area, near the busy Antrim Road.

The assault has been widely condemned by police and political leaders, who have appealed for calm amid concerns that planned anti-immigration protests in Northern Ireland on Tuesday evening could turn violent. Detectives have stated that there is no indication the attack was terror-related.

Police Response

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has declared a critical incident in response to the attack, which was captured on video. The footage shows a man stabbing the victim in the head and neck while he was on the ground, with bystanders, including one wielding a hurling stick, intervening to stop the assault. A kitchen knife was recovered from the scene.
