Man, 62, found dead in Barnsley; man arrested on murder suspicion

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a missing person was discovered inside a property in Barnsley. The 62-year-old man, from Sheffield, was pronounced dead at the scene on George Street.

Discovery and arrest

Police launched a search for the missing man on Friday evening (August 14) before his body was found around five hours later. Officers from South Yorkshire Police rushed to the scene at around 10.15pm.

It has since been confirmed that a man, 60, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody. The police force has referred itself to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) as the man had previously been reported missing.

Investigation and cordons

Investigating officers have put up three cordons in the area, including one on the TransPennine trail. Separate scenes are in place on George Street as detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man's death.

Detective Chief Inspector Aneela Khalil-Khan, who is currently leading the investigation, said: "This news will be shocking to the local communities, and not something they expect to be waking up to on a Saturday morning."

"Our officers have moved fast, and have made an arrest. They are now working hard to determine the circumstances around this tragic incident."

Appeal for information

South Yorkshire Police are continuing to investigate the death and are appealing to the public for relevant information. They are keen to hear from witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam footage from the area.

The force added: "Anyone with information is urged to come forward to police by calling 101 or reporting it to the force online, quoting incident number 1238 of 14 August 2026."
