ITV's Loose Women interrupted its Monday broadcast with a breaking news update on the investigation into Ann Widdecombe's death. Host Christine Lampard revealed that counter-terrorism police have taken over the case following new evidence.
Breaking News Delivered On Air
The show returned from a scheduled break on July 13, now airing seasonally after cuts earlier this year. Minutes in, Lampard addressed viewers alongside panellists Gloria Hunniford, Brenda Edwards, and Coleen Nolan. After an advertisement break, she stated: "Welcome back, just before the break, we were talking about Ann Widdecombe, who was found dead on Thursday. In the last few minutes, police have revealed the counter-terrorism police are now leading the investigation into her death. The police have just said new information and evidence has come to light. So a very much developing story."
Police Investigation Update
The former Conservative MP and Reform UK spokesperson, aged 78, was found dead on July 10. Police initially arrested a 28-year-old white British man in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. Counter Terrorism Policing South East later confirmed that "new information and evidence have come to light," according to the Mirror. Authorities stated there was "nothing to suggest it was politically motivated."
Official Response
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood released a statement: "The police are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry to establish the motivation for this attack. I will be updating the House further this afternoon." Lampard added: "We'll bring you anything more as it does come through."
Tributes and Legacy
Ann Widdecombe, also known for appearances on Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother, was remembered by her agents as having a life "driven by her strong Christian values and commitment to public service." They noted she loved the "cut and thrust of political debate" and was "still actively campaigning for Reform UK" after leaving Parliament 16 years ago.
