Serial killer Levi Bellfield, 58, who is serving multiple whole-life orders at HMP Frankland, will be questioned by detectives as part of a double murder probe. He reportedly confessed to the murders of Lin Russell, 45, and her six-year-old daughter Megan, who were bludgeoned to death with a hammer in Chillenden, Kent, on July 9, 1996. Ms Russell's older daughter, nine-year-old Josie, was severely injured but survived.
Bellfield's alleged confession
In a four-page document, Bellfield reportedly stated: "I was wearing bright yellow Marigold washing-up gloves and holding a hammer in my right hand. In my car, I had a screwdriver, a lock knife, a hammer, yellow Marigold gloves and a very long black bootlace." He added: "My first intention was to just attack Lin, but I quickly changed my mind due to the screams and was worried she would fight back given the children were with her. I approached Lin and held her right arm tight."
However, he reportedly retracted the confession before admitting the attacks again in a further signed statement in 2023. Officials from the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) will now visit Bellfield at HMP Frankland over the following weeks, according to The Sun. A source said: "They want to ask him why he was in Kent and why he has retracted confessions in the past."
Michael Stone's conviction under scrutiny
Michael Stone, 66, was convicted of the murders in 1998 and sentenced to life, despite no forensic evidence linking him to the crime scene. He recently provided a fresh DNA sample to the CCRC, and concerns about his conviction are growing. Bellfield, who is already imprisoned for the murders of Milly Dowler, 13, Marsha McDonnell, 19, and Amélie Delagrange, 22, as well as the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy, committed his crimes across Southwest London and Surrey between 2002 and 2004, stalking victims before ambushing them with weapons.
