Levenshulme park reopens after fatal stabbing of man, 24

Chapel Street Park in Levenshulme has been reopened to the public after a 24-year-old man was stabbed to death there on Saturday evening (August 15). A murder investigation is underway, and police have confirmed that a 27-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Police cordons removed

Cordons around the park have been removed, according to a joint statement from Labour councillors Basat Sheikh and Zahid Hussain. The councillors expressed their concerns over the 'tragic incident' and offered support to residents who witnessed it, many of whom were children. They noted that residents can access support via Greater Manchester Victims' Services.

The statement read: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that took place in Chapel Street Park on Saturday evening. Our thoughts remain with the victim, their loved ones, and everyone affected by this distressing event. We recognise that a number of adults and children witnessed what happened, and we understand the significant impact this may have had on those present. We can confirm that the police cordon has now been removed and Chapel Street Park reopened earlier today. While the park is once again accessible to the public, we appreciate that many residents may still be feeling shocked and concerned."

Investigation ongoing

Emergency services were called to the Levenshulme neighbourhood at around 7pm on the night of the incident. Forensic teams and Tactical Aid Unit officers conducted fingertip searches within the police cordon. Floral tributes have been placed in the park in memory of the victim, and police are working to locate his next of kin.

Detective Inspector Alex Wilkinson, from GMP's Major Incident Team, said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim in this tragic incident. Officers acted swiftly to arrest a man, who has now been bailed pending further enquiries. Our investigation is ongoing and we would like to hear from anyone who may have information that can assist us. Anyone in the Chapel Street area around the time of this incident, or who has mobile phone, CCTV, Ring doorbell and dashcam footage, can contact police on 0161 856 9008 quoting the log number 2983 of 15/08/2026. Reports can also be made via our Major Incident Portal here: Public Portal. Alternatively contact independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Police believe the attack was 'isolated' with 'no wider threat to the public'. The councillors' statement also reassured residents that Manchester City Council's Parks Service continues to work closely with Greater Manchester Police as the investigation progresses. GMP officers are currently identifying and speaking with witnesses to help gather evidence and ensure that anyone affected is able to access appropriate support.
