Russell Brand's wife Laura Gallacher comes from one of Britain's best-known sporting families, with a famous television presenter sister and a Ryder Cup legend father who reportedly once begged her to end her relationship with the comedian.
Brand, 51, was found guilty of rape and three counts of sexual assault at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday, November 5, following a trial involving allegations made by six women.
A Family in the Spotlight
His wife Laura, 39, bowed her head and gripped her chair tightly as the verdict was read out, before being rushed from court by the couple's bodyguard. She has stood by him throughout the proceedings, alongside her father Bernard Gallacher, the former European Ryder Cup captain, who was pictured accompanying his daughter and son-in-law to court earlier this week.
However, Bernard, one of British golf's most recognisable figures, previously had serious reservations about his daughter's relationship with Brand and reportedly urged her not to marry him.
According to a Daily Mail report published in 2023, the golfing great was concerned about the 12-year age gap between the pair when they first began dating, with Laura just 19 and Brand already in his 30s.
Family Support at Trial
Despite those reported early reservations, Bernard has publicly supported his daughter during Brand's criminal trial. The 77-year-old was photographed arriving at Southwark Crown Court on Monday alongside Laura and Brand, placing his hands on his daughter's back as the family made their way towards the building.
He subsequently sat beside Laura in the public gallery as Brand's barrister, Ian Winter KC, delivered his closing speech to the jury.
Bernard is a hugely respected figure in British sport, having represented Europe in eight Ryder Cups before captaining the team on three occasions. Originally from Bathgate in West Lothian, Scotland, he is also the father of former Sky Sports presenter Kirsty Gallacher, who has enjoyed a lengthy broadcasting career and is Laura's older sister.
Relationship History and Verdict
Kirsty reportedly played a significant role in bringing Brand and Laura together in the first place, having introduced her younger sister to the comedian when she was a teenager. The pair began dating in 2007, but their initial relationship was short-lived.
Giving evidence during Brand's trial, Laura revealed that his difficulty remaining faithful had contributed to their separation. The couple eventually reunited in 2015 and married two years later. They now have three children together.
Laura has remained publicly supportive of her husband, giving evidence as a character witness during his trial and describing him as an exceptionally attentive partner and devoted father.
Thursday's verdict brought the trial to a conclusion, with jurors finding Brand guilty of raping a 21-year-old fan whom he met following a stand-up performance at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2009. He was also convicted of sexually assaulting an MTV worker at a Soho bar in 2004, a Capital Radio employee in 2005 and a Channel 4 worker in 2009.
However, Brand, who had denied all charges, was acquitted of three other charges, including an allegation of rape dating back to 1999 and an allegation of attempted indecent assault involving another MTV employee in 2001. The jury also found him not guilty of a separate allegation of oral rape involving the MTV worker he sexually assaulted in 2004.
