Laura Gallacher's family 'begged' her to leave Brand

Russell Brand's wife Laura Gallacher comes from one of Britain's most celebrated sporting families, with a well-known television presenter sister and a Ryder Cup legend father who allegedly once pleaded with her to leave the comedian.

Brand, 51, was convicted of rape and three counts of sexual assault at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday, November 5, after a trial. His wife Laura, 39, lowered her head and clutched her chair firmly as the verdict was delivered, before being escorted from court by the couple's bodyguard.

A Sporting Family Background

Laura's father, Bernard Gallacher, is a former European Ryder Cup captain and one of British golf's most iconic figures. He reportedly previously harboured significant doubts about his daughter's relationship with Brand and allegedly begged her not to wed him.

According to a Daily Mail report from 2023, the golfing legend was troubled by the 12-year age difference between them when they initially started dating, with Laura just 19 and Brand already in his 30s. Bernard was reportedly 'delighted' when the relationship concluded in 2007, before being taken aback when the pair reignited their romance several years afterwards.

A source close to the family told the newspaper at the time: "Bernard is a very strait-laced guy, with no side to him. So in that sense, he and Brand are chalk and cheese."

Standing by His Daughter

Despite those reportedly early misgivings, Bernard has stood firmly by his daughter throughout Brand's criminal trial. The 77-year-old was pictured arriving at Southwark Crown Court on Monday alongside Laura and Brand, placing his hands on his daughter's back as the family made their way towards the entrance.

He then took a seat next to Laura in the public gallery as Brand's barrister, Ian Winter KC, delivered his closing speech to the jury.

Bernard is a hugely revered figure in British sport, having represented Europe in eight Ryder Cups before leading the team as captain on three occasions. Originally from Bathgate in West Lothian, Scotland, he is also the father of former Sky Sports presenter Kirsty Gallacher, who is Laura's elder sister.

How the Couple Met

Kirsty reportedly played a pivotal role in bringing Brand and Laura together initially, having introduced her younger sister to the comedian when she was still a teenager. The couple began their romance in 2007, though their early relationship proved short-lived.

While giving evidence during Brand's trial, Laura disclosed that his struggles with fidelity had been a contributing factor in their split. The pair ultimately got back together in 2015 and wed two years afterwards. They now share three children.

The Trial and Verdict

Kirsty also attracted attention when accusations against Brand initially surfaced in September 2023. The ex-Sky Sports News host posted a video in which Brand denied the allegations, adding a red heart emoji to the Instagram upload. The post was later removed, as national media outlets reported at the time.

Laura has stayed publicly behind her husband, providing testimony as a character witness during his trial and describing him as an exceptionally attentive partner and devoted father.

Thursday's verdict concluded the trial, with jurors finding Brand guilty of raping a 21-year-old fan whom he met following a stand-up performance at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2009. He was also found guilty of sexually assaulting an MTV employee at a Soho bar in 2004, a Capital Radio staff member in 2005 and a Channel 4 worker in 2009.

Brand, who had denied all charges, was cleared of three additional charges, including a rape allegation from 1999 and an attempted indecent assault allegation involving another MTV employee in 2001. The jury also cleared him of a separate oral rape allegation involving the MTV worker he sexually assaulted in 2004.
