Russell Brand's wife, Laura Gallacher, has vowed to stand by the convicted comedian as he awaits sentencing on Monday, November 9. The disgraced TV star, 51, is facing a "significant" stint behind bars after being found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault.
Wife's Loyalty Amidst Collapse
His wife Laura, who was seen supporting him throughout his trial at Southwark Crown Court, is said to be making plans to return to the UK from Florida with their three young children while he's behind bars. A rape conviction can carry a life sentence, with standard maximum determinate sentences often reaching up to 19 years depending on the severity and guidelines. Sexual assault convictions carry a maximum sentence of 10 years per count.
An insider told The Sun that devastated Laura feels her "whole world has collapsed", as friends have offered Laura their support. The insider added: "Her husband is a rapist and that will follow her everywhere she goes. But Laura is resolutely loyal to Russell and has been for a long time."
Insider's Account of Laura's State
"She believed what he told her and has stood by him this entire time. As his wife, she is loyal to Russell. And he undoubtedly will need her support more than ever now. The people closest to her believe she will stay in the UK and wait for him. But right now, this is all incredibly fresh. It's a living nightmare at this moment."
It comes as Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said on BBC Breakfast that he "wouldn't be surprised" if more alleged victims would come forward to accuse Brand of further offences.
Fresh Allegations and Prison Incident
Brand faces fresh allegations as he has been accused of raping two more women, one of whom was a 16-year-old schoolgirl. The allegations were raised at previous hearings at Southwark Crown Court, and mean Brand could face further charges. He has already been questioned by Metropolitan Police officers regarding the complaints.
Meanwhile, emergency services were called to HMP Wandsworth on Saturday, November 7, where Brand is being held ahead of his sentencing. Three ambulances, two ambulance cars and fire crews scrambled to the Category B prison at 9.46am. It is not known whether the ambulances were called for Brand.
The star was said to be "petrified" during his first night behind bars, as he was strip-searched and scanned upon arrival, before being put in solitary confinement and given an "inedible" microwave meal. During the night, he was also escorted to the prison chapel, where he is said to have knelt and prayed.
