Inquest opens into Cardiff student crash death

An inquest has opened into the death of an 18-year-old A-level student from Cardiff who died in a car crash. Dominic Luke Bailey, from Ely, died at the scene of a collision in an area known as The Tumble on the A48 at around 8pm on Saturday, June 6.

Mr Bailey was the driver of a vehicle involved in the crash. Pontypridd Coroner's Court heard on Thursday that he tragically died at the scene.

South Wales Police has previously said the crash involved a grey MG and a black Land Rover Defender. Two other people – a 59-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man from Bonvilston, Vale of Glamorgan, who were in the Land Rover – were injured and remain in hospital.

A post-mortem examination was carried out by Dr Thomas Hockey at the University Hospital of Wales on June 10, four days after the crash, though a provisional cause of death was not provided to the court as it is pending further investigation.

An investigation into Mr Bailey's cause of death has commenced, with further evidence to be provided to the court following the completion of the police investigation. The inquest was adjourned to a date yet to be confirmed.

At the briefing hearing on Thursday morning coroner Patricia Morgan expressed her condolences to Mr Bailey's family.

Mr Bailey's family issued a tribute to him on Monday. They said he was getting ready to go travelling once he had finished school in Cardiff.

The family's tribute reads: “Dominic was finishing his A-level exams at the Bishop of Llandaff High School where he had been a pupil for the past seven years. He had been offered a place at University of Malaysia but decided to follow his dreams of seeing the world and go travelling instead.

“There was no one quite like Dominic. He could put a smile on anyone’s face. He was such a clever young man who had his whole life ahead of him. The family is devastated. Life will never be the same again without him.”

South Wales Police is appealing for any witnesses who saw the collision or witnessed the manner of driving of both cars prior to the collision to come forward.

Officers are urging anyone travelling through the area at the time to check their dashcams and private CCTV for relevant footage. Anyone with information is urged to contact South Wales Police quoting occurrence 2600177729.
