Investigations into the death of Lance Bombardier Ciara Sullivan, who fell from her horse at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, are likely to take months, an inquest opening has been told. The 24-year-old soldier, part of the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery, died on May 15 after leaving the arena at Windsor Castle.
Inquest Adjourned for Lengthy Investigations
Hannah Godfrey, Berkshire's area coroner, adjourned the inquest so that work by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and on behalf of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) can be completed. She stated that the investigations by the HSE and the Defence Safety Authority could potentially take longer than 18 months to complete.
A post-mortem examination following Ms Sullivan's death gave a provisional cause of death as chest injuries. The coroner extended her condolences to Sullivan's friends and family for the "tragic loss of her life."
Royal Family Present at the Incident
King Charles and other members of the Royal Family were present at the arena when the incident occurred, a spokesperson for Buckingham Palace confirmed, adding that the king was "shocked and saddened" by Ms Sullivan's death. The then-Defence Secretary John Healey said: "Lance Bombardier Ciara Sullivan was a brilliant young soldier who served our nation with dedication. We’re all deeply shocked and saddened by her death. My thoughts are with Ciara’s family, loved ones and colleagues at this devastating time."
Military Career and Tributes
Ms Sullivan, from Crawley, West Sussex, joined the army aged 18, the MoD said in May. Her career began at the Army Training Centre in Pirbright, Surrey, before joining the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery in 2021. Her commanding officer described Sullivan — known as "Sully" to her friends — as a "fearless and gifted horsewoman." She "was to all who had the privilege of serving alongside her, a bright light in any room they entered," they said. The officer added that she was "an immensely professional soldier and an exceptional jockey."
Funeral and MoD Statement
Her funeral was held on June 2 at the Guards Chapel, Wellington Barracks, with family, friends, regimental senior staff, and military colleagues filling the chapel to pay their respects. In a statement published on May 18, the MoD said: "It is with great sadness that the Ministry of Defence confirms the death of Lance Bombardier Ciara Sullivan, who died on 15 May following a tragic incident at the Royal Windsor Horse Show." The statement highlighted her love for horses and her involvement in Ceremonial Operations, including multiple Royal Gun Salutes in Hyde Park and Green Park, as well as deployments for Op BRIDGE (the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022) and Op GOLDEN ORB (the Coronation of King Charles III in 2023). The MoD added: "She was passionate about everything to do with The Troop and participated in every extra activity available including show jumping and The Troop Race."
