GB News Interrupted for Breaking Alert Amid Belfast Riots
GB News Halted for Breaking News on Belfast Riots

GB News was interrupted for a breaking news alert on Wednesday evening as the channel's Northern Irish reporter, Dougie Beattie, delivered a live update from Belfast following a night of violent riots. The broadcast was halted as Beattie reported that crowds had begun to gather in the city, with police officers preparing for a second night of unrest after an explosion.

Increased Police Presence

An additional 200 officers have been deployed to the streets after residents were forced to flee their homes, which were set ablaze on Tuesday night during major riots. The destruction occurred following a "sickening" knife attack on Stephen Ogilvie, who lost an eye and remains hospitalized.

As Beattie described the scene, police officers and a water cannon arrived at a roundabout near where a Sudanese man was charged over a knife attack on Monday. The camera zoomed in on officers carrying shields.

Reporter on the Scene

Beattie stated: "There was a crowd of about 800 people who went towards a hotel which was full of asylum seekers, and the police stopped them up the road, and protestors managed to set a yard on fire. It caused an explosion." He attempted to get closer to the water cannon but expressed caution, fearing protestors might rush toward the crew. The cameras then panned to thick black smoke as fire services worked to control the blaze.

Family Statement

Ogilvie's family released a statement today condemning the unrest and emphasizing that migrants "make a deeply valuable contribution" to Northern Ireland. They added: "We do not want this terrible tragedy to be used to divide people or fuel hostility."

Court Appearance

The suspect, Hadi Alodid, appeared at Belfast Magistrates' Court today, charged with attempted murder, threats to kill an NHS radiographer, and possession of a knife. Alodid, 30, was remanded in custody for four weeks. The Home Office announced it will intensify immigration enforcement in Northern Ireland following the brutal stabbing.
