A British father has been charged with negligence following the death of his three-year-old son, who fell from a hotel window in Cyprus while the pair were reportedly playing 'aeroplanes'. The toddler plunged 33 feet from a fourth-floor corridor window at a hotel in Chloraka, Paphos.
Incident Details
The family had only just arrived at the hotel when the incident occurred at approximately 6:40pm on July 12. The boy was playing with his father near the window when he fell. An ambulance rushed to the scene, but the child was unresponsive when paramedics arrived. He was taken to Paphos General Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
The boy's grandfather was present during the incident, as the family was heading downstairs for dinner. The father, aged 37, was arrested on Sunday following the tragedy.
Court Proceedings
On Monday morning, the father appeared before the Paphos district court, where police requested an eight-day remand to facilitate their investigation. The court session was briefly paused as the man broke down in tears, visibly distraught over his son's death.
Paphos Assistant Police Director of Operations, Michalis Nikolaou, confirmed that the father has been accused of causing death due to a reckless or dangerous act. He also faces charges of neglect of duty as head of the family and neglect of responsibility as a person who had the care of another person.
Official Response
The UK Foreign Office stated: 'We are supporting the family of a British child who has died in Cyprus and are in contact with the local authorities.' The investigation is ongoing, and the father remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
