A former Louisiana mayor has been sentenced to just 90 days in jail after being convicted of raping a 16-year-old boy. Misty Roberts, 44, who served as mayor of DeRidder from 2018, was found guilty of carnal knowledge of a juvenile (statutory rape) and indecent behavior with a juvenile. The assault occurred in July 2024 at her home during a pool party where alcohol was consumed.
Sentencing Details
Roberts faced up to 17 years in prison but received two five-year suspended sentences, to run concurrently unless she violates parole. She must register as a sex offender, pay $5,000 in fines, and undergo regular drug screenings along with psychotropic and psychological therapy after release.
Courtroom Apology
During the hearing, Roberts expressed remorse, stating: “I blame myself then, I blame myself today, and I will blame myself for the rest of my life. I let a lot of people down, and I am the only person responsible for that.” She also apologized to the victim’s family, saying: “I am sorry. I can’t give back the high school days… I can’t take away the embarrassment that so many mean people on the internet have put them through.”
Victim's Mother Speaks Out
The victim’s mother delivered a powerful statement, describing Roberts as a predator “with hair extensions, high heels, Botox, and other modifications.” She recounted finding her son crying at night and noted that “half of his high school experience was taken from him.” She concluded by telling Roberts: “Stay the hell away from my family.”
The case has drawn widespread attention due to Roberts’ position as a public official and the relatively lenient sentence. The victim’s family expressed relief that justice was served but emphasized the lasting trauma inflicted on their son.
