Details of the Attack
George stabbed Ms Rook 31 times during an argument at their home in Stoke Newington after she suggested ending their ten-year relationship. Victim Impact Statements
Ms Rook's father, retired Old Bailey judge Peter Rook, called George utterly selfish, while her mother Susanna Rook described him as a wicked, totally narcissistic, damaged person. In a victim impact statement, Mrs Rook hailed her daughter as optimistic, inclusive, and full of fun, adding that the family will never come to terms with her death.
Ms Rook's sister Sophie told the court that without Annabel, there is less joy and less hope, and the family is left with the painful question of whether they could have done more to help her escape.
Background of Abuse
The court heard evidence of George's history of angry outbursts and violence towards Ms Rook. Friends and family testified to his unreasonable flashing rage, tendency to overreact, and controlling behavior. Ms Rook had confided to her father that living with George was like walking on eggshells and had acknowledged the relationship was abusive weeks before her death.
On the night of the murder, June 16 last year, George punched and throttled Ms Rook before arming himself with a kitchen knife. He was heard shouting you lied as he committed the murder, having flown into a rage after discovering that Ms Rook had kept a secret told to her in confidence.
Gas Explosion and Aftermath
After the murder, George triggered a gas explosion likened by neighbors to a mini earthquake, which blew off part of the roof. Prosecutor William Emlyn Jones KC suggested the blast was an attempt to destroy evidence and a final up yours to the Rook family. George was found lying on the kitchen floor covered in blood when neighbors investigated.
George attempted to claim loss of self-control as a partial defense, but this was rejected due to evidence of his short fuse and violent behavior. He was convicted of murder and admitted arson over the gas explosion.
Ms Rook was the co-founder of social enterprise MamaSuze, which supported refugee women and children through creative arts workshops. Her best friend Sian Davin vowed to continue running the organization to keep Annabel's legacy alive.
