A woman who described herself as a "giddy" Russell Brand fan told a jury she had to sit on an ice cube tray because she was in so much pain after being allegedly raped by the comedian at his home.
The alleged victim, who claims Russell Brand raped her at his Hampstead residence, told officers she never imagined such an assault "would happen to a nice girl", Southwark Crown Court heard.
Alleged Assault After Backstage Meeting
Brand is accused of raping the woman after meeting her when she attended one of his stand-up performances at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2009. She told officers she voluntarily participated in a threesome with Brand backstage at the Apollo, before heading to his Hampstead property aware they would engage in sexual activity.
However, she claims a consensual encounter turned into rape when Brand initiated anal sex and disregarded her repeated requests for him to stop.
"I didn't think what happened to me would happen to a nice girl," she stated in her video-recorded interview shown at court. She described how upon arriving at his residence, Brand compelled her to shower while he watched, before ordering her to clean her teeth with a toothbrush that had been prepared.
Woman's Account of the Encounter
The woman claimed she "wanted it to be over" during the consensual intercourse, before recounting the "traumatic" alleged anal rape, and told officers Brand had put Quantum Leap on the television once everything had finished.
She told officers: "From the very moment it happened, I felt I had willingly gone there and from what his reputation was, what did I expect?" She stated Brand "hurt me and harmed me, and when I asked him to stop he didn't", adding: "The horror in anyone that I told was not enough to make me believe I didn't deserve it."
The woman told the court she had to "sit on an ice cube tray" because she was "in so much pain" following her alleged rape by Brand. The court was told she stated: "It was one of the most painful experiences I've ever gone through."
Charges and Denial
Brand denies all the charges he faces – three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one charge of indecent assault.
The woman – who is the last alleged victim to take the stand – claims she had a threesome with Brand backstage at the Hammersmith Apollo, but was left feeling "awful" and "disgusting".
She described how Brand allegedly invited three women for drinks following his performance before the packed audience at the venue in February 2009, pointing at them in the foyer with a simple "you".
She claimed she declined full intercourse with Brand due to having a boyfriend at the time, but had performed oral sex on the comedian while watching him engage sexually with the other woman.
Upon informing Brand of her relationship, she recalled him responding: "We don't belong to anyone, we're all free, the ownership of people is sort of what we've been sold, and that I shouldn't feel bad."
Recounting her distress to police, the woman stated: "I was quite tearful at this point as well," before adding: "I just came out feeling f****** awful. The scenario was not something I had been in before, and I felt kind of disgusting, if I'm honest, when I came out, but that was more about how I felt about being there."
Background and Aftermath
The court was told the woman confessed to her boyfriend afterwards and they split up. She claims she subsequently went on to exchange texts with Brand, and was picked up by his driver to visit his Hampstead residence.
She told officers she was a "massive Russell Brand fan" and a "massive comedy fan" when she attended the Hammersmith Apollo performance. She and her friend were "selected" by the comedian in the foyer following the show, she stated, when the comedian pointed at her and said: "You".
"We were invited upstairs for drinks with Russell and whoever else was up there," she recalled. The woman described feeling "excited" to be chosen and "quite giddy", though she also remembered wondering "what the hell am I doing?".
She told officers she chose to sleep with Brand again following her relationship breakdown. She explained to the police officer: "I want to make this really clear, that I went there knowing that I would have sex with him. I've really struggled for a really long time to accept what happened to me, because I went there knowingly and willingly."
She remembered feeling that Brand was indifferent to her identity as the consensual sexual encounter began. She stated: "It didn't matter that I was there. I remember thinking I just want it to be over. It felt very awkward. It didn't matter who I was, and I just sort of wanted it to be over."
She alleges Brand removed the condom and anally raped her without warning, telling the court: "I don't know how long it took for me between it going on and me asking him to stop, I don't think it was very long."
Following the alleged incident, she claims the comedian appeared "horrified" and ordered her to "clear up the mess you have made". She described using wipes and black toilet roll from Brand's bathroom, telling police: "I did it, and I don't know why."
She continued: "He put the TV on, I remember it was something like Quantum Leap." The woman stated she informed friends and family subsequently, and underwent sexual health testing, fearing she had contracted a disease from Brand. The trial continues.
