Boy who lost leg in stabbing thought he would die

A 17-year-old boy whose right leg was amputated after he was stabbed at Barry Island told police he thought he was going to die. Idris Ahmed, 19, denies causing grievous bodily harm with intent, unlawfully inflicting grievous bodily harm and having an article with a bladed point.

Attack on Bank Holiday Monday

The alleged attack happened at Barry Island on Bank Holiday Monday, May 25. It is alleged Ahmed approached the complainant from behind, pulled a knife from his shorts and stabbed him in the leg without warning.

The complainant's friend was said to be "nervous" and "quiet" because he believed Ahmed's group "had an issue" with him, and the 17-year-old sought to act as a peacemaker.

Injury and Amputation

The alleged victim suffered a wound to the back of his leg with blood "spurting" out of it. He was taken to hospital, but despite the efforts of medical staff, his right leg was amputated through the knee.

A trial at Newport Crown Court heard a witness heard someone say "I need to dash this" before hearing something metal thrown against a wall. A police search of the area led to a knife being recovered.

Arrest and Denial

Ahmed was arrested after handing himself into Cardiff Bay police station. He denies stabbing anyone and said he knew nothing about the incident. He said he was not aware who had stabbed the complainant and denied ever carrying a knife in a public place.

In a recorded police interview, the complainant said he felt something in his leg and when he looked there was blood. He said: "People came over to me, it was all chaos and I passed out… I woke up and people were wrapping towels around my leg."

The complainant said his "mind was racing" and he was "in shock". He added: "I thought I was going to die to be honest." The trial continues.
