A murder investigation has been launched after a man died following an altercation at a hotel in Barnsley, South Yorkshire.
The victim, a man in his 50s, was allegedly assaulted by another man during the incident at The Star Hotel on Barnsley Road. Emergency services arrived at the hotel just before 11.30pm on Friday and found the victim seriously injured.
Victim pronounced dead in hospital
The man was taken to hospital but, despite the best efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead. His family have been informed and are being supported by officers.
South Yorkshire Police has confirmed that a murder investigation is now underway.
Arrest made in murder inquiry
The force said a 34-year-old man was arrested yesterday morning on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.
Detective Inspector Laura Procter, from the Major Crime Team, said: "This was a devastating incident that has left a man dead. Our officers worked at pace to identify and arrest a suspect and we do not believe that any others were involved."
She added: "As our investigation continues, I would ask that anyone with information that could help with enquiries please gets in touch."
