An inquest into the death of Ann Widdecombe will open on Tuesday at County Hall in Exeter, as a 28-year-old man remains in police custody under terrorism legislation. The former Conservative MP and Strictly Come Dancing star, 78, was found dead at her home in Haytor, Dartmoor, Devon, on July 9 after suffering serious injuries.
Arrest and Investigation
A 28-year-old white British man was arrested on suspicion of murder on July 11 and is still being questioned by detectives. Two days later, counter-terrorism police took over the investigation and further arrested the man on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. Police believe the attack was targeted.
The initial seven-day detention period under terrorism laws expires on Monday evening, but investigators can apply for extensions up to 14 days in total.
Inquest Details
The inquest will be opened at 10am on Tuesday, July 21, at County Hall in Exeter. It is expected to formally identify the deceased and set a timeline for further proceedings.
