One year after the Air India disaster that claimed 241 lives, grieving families are still waiting for answers. Accident investigators are set to release an update on their findings, but a full report remains elusive.
Unanswered Questions Linger
The Air India plane crash, which occurred on June 12 last year, saw a Boeing 787 Dreamliner crash into a residential area shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad Airport. The explosion killed 241 passengers and 19 people on the ground. Only one passenger, British-Indian Vishwashkumar Ramesh, survived.
International regulations require a final accident report within one year, but India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is not yet ready to release complete findings. An interim report is expected instead, as the investigation is complex and time-consuming.
Preliminary Report Findings
The preliminary report, published 30 days after the crash, revealed that both fuel cutoff switches were flipped shortly after takeoff, shutting down the engines. The report did not assign blame, but experts noted that flipping the switches requires manual action.
Cockpit voice recordings captured a panicked exchange where one pilot asked the other why he cut off the fuel, with the other denying the action. The pilots declared a mayday before the crash.
Fuel Switch Mystery
Aviation experts have speculated that the fuel switches were deliberately moved. Captain Mohan Ranganathan stated that the switches are designed to prevent accidental activation, making deliberate action likely. However, the Indian Commercial Pilots' Association condemned such speculation as irresponsible and insensitive.
Medical Records Probe
Medical records of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal are being examined after claims of poor mental health. However, Air India stated that both pilots passed mandatory medical exams within the last two years.
Survivor's Story
Vishwashkumar Ramesh, the sole survivor, crawled out of an opening in the fuselage. He has since struggled with trauma and criticized the care he received. Air India has offered a meeting with senior leaders.
Families Demand Truth
Families of victims have criticized the investigation as vague and demand transparency. They hope the final report will provide clarity and accountability.
