Detectives investigating the cold case murder of Carol Clark, a sex worker whose body was discovered over three decades ago, have expressed renewed optimism that a note she left could prove "significant" in cracking the long-unsolved crime. The Gloucestershire Police have reopened the case, focusing on fresh leads and witness accounts as they mark the 33rd anniversary of the grim discovery.
The Disappearance and Discovery
Carol Clark, a 32-year-old resident of Bristol, was last seen on 26 March 1993 at approximately 11.30pm in the Montpelier area of the city. Witnesses reported her entering a Volvo car, dressed in distinctive attire including a black baseball cap, brown leather jacket, blue denim mini skirt, black polo-necked jumper, and a plain blue T-shirt. Hours earlier, she had left a note for her boyfriend indicating she was going out to find work and planned to return by 2.30am, but she never came home.
Two days later, on 28 March 1993, a dog walker stumbled upon Ms Clark's body partially clothed in reeds and undergrowth beside the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal near Sharpness Docks. She had been strangled, with her neck broken, and was found wearing only her underwear and boots; the rest of her clothing has never been recovered, adding to the mystery of her final hours.
Investigation and Recent Developments
Gloucestershire Police launched an extensive murder investigation at the time, but despite multiple reviews and inquiries, the perpetrator has remained elusive. The case was reopened three years ago after new information emerged, leading to a public appeal that yielded a crucial witness. This witness came forward to report seeing a woman matching Ms Clark's description walking along the Berkley bypass with two men on the day she disappeared.
In recent years, three men have been arrested on suspicion of the murder: a 69-year-old from Gloucestershire, a 48-year-old from Lincolnshire, and a 66-year-old from Newcastle. Detectives have since ruled out the man from Newcastle, but the other two remain under active investigation, with police emphasizing that the note left by Ms Clark could be pivotal in linking suspects to the crime.

Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Usher, who is leading the investigation, stated: "I am convinced someone out there knows what happened to Carol, and we remain committed to doing everything we can to secure justice for her and her family." He highlighted that this weekend marks the 33rd anniversary of the body's discovery, prompting a renewed appeal for information.
Usher added: "We strongly suspect Carol was alive all of Saturday 27 March 1993 and potentially with two men. Her body was likely left at Sharpness Docks in daylight hours, coinciding with celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the British Waterways, meaning many people were around. Carol's distinctive clothing makes her memorable, so we urge anyone who saw her that Saturday or noticed suspicious behavior to contact us.
