The trial of a man accused of murdering his wife has collapsed after the jury was discharged. Judge Daniel Williams dismissed the jury and ordered a retrial to take place later this year.
Trial Details
Michael Davies, 57, was standing trial at Newport Crown Court after admitting to killing his wife, Tracey Davies, 48. The jury was sworn in on Monday, June 8, and the trial officially began on June 9. It was expected to last 10 days, but just before the defence was due to start on Tuesday, June 16, a legal issue was presented to the judge.
Legal Proceedings
The trial was adjourned for the day. Following legal discussions on Wednesday morning, Judge Daniel Williams dismissed the jury and announced that a retrial would be rescheduled for Tuesday, September 1, and is expected to last a fortnight.
Judge Williams addressed the jury, saying: "This means your work on this case is at an end. This case will be retried again by another jury and that trial, the retrial, will start on the first of September. It's a decision I hope you will understand, which has been arrived at with great reluctance, and I understand it must be very frustrating for you not to be able to finish the job you have started."
The judge thanked the jury for their service, and they were dismissed.
