Missing Missouri lawyer found alive after six days

Missouri deputy attorney general Shaun Mackelprang has been found alive six days after disappearing during a solo hike on a Wyoming mountain trail known for being home to bears. He was located on Wednesday morning near Scott Lake, the Sublette County Sheriff's Office said.

Search launched after vehicle found at trailhead

A large search was initiated after Mackelprang was reported missing and his vehicle was located at the Green River Lakes Trailhead. He had started his trek on August 20 with a planned destination of Gannett Peak. The search effort involved ground search teams, the sheriff's office drone team, and a rescue helicopter.

Rescue and reunion

The attorney was located and safely prepared for helicopter extraction at about 9.45am local time, according to the sheriff's office. Photos shared on social media show Mackelprang being placed in the helicopter while surrounded by members of the search and rescue team. Other images show him being reunited with his loved ones on the tarmac, with one person visibly raising his arms in the air in joy. Mackelprang was then seen hugging a woman while an emergency services official stood close by alongside an ambulance.

The statement added: "We also sincerely thank the public and backcountry users who shared information, reviewed photographs and GPS data, shared the missing-person information, and helped get the word out." Missouri Attorney General Catherine L. Hanaway said in a social media post: "We are thrilled to hear that Deputy Attorney General Shaun Mackelprang has been located." She added: "Our office is beyond grateful for everyone’s prayers and the steadfast work of the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office and drone team, Tip Top Search and Rescue’s volunteers and helicopter crew, and Wyoming State leaders."
