In a chilling twist to a decade-old missing persons case, the final photograph sent by 18-year-old Daylenn Pua to his grandmother appears to capture a mysterious figure crouching in the bushes behind him. The image, taken on the day he vanished while hiking Hawaii's infamous Haiku Stairs, has fueled speculation that the teenager was the victim of foul play.
The figure, quickly dubbed the "shadow man" by online sleuths, remains unidentified. Pua, an aspiring pastry chef from a large family of seven children, was last seen on February 27, 2015. His grandmother told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser: "He always lights up the day."
The Haiku Stairs and the Disappearance
The Haiku Stairs, also known as the "Stairway to Heaven," consist of 3,922 steel steps originally built during World War II to access US Navy communication installations on O'ahu. The trail has since been closed to the public, but at the time of Pua's disappearance, it was a popular—though illegal—hiking destination.
Investigators believe Pua may have taken the Moanalua Valley route rather than ascending the stairs directly, as he referenced the valley in one of his final Facebook comments. Ethan Pearson-Pomerantz, president of Oahu Search and Rescue, explained: "There's the ridge trail, which is the popular way to do it, and then there's the valley trail, which is the less popular way. In 2015, the junction of those two trails was not super well marked. And it is entirely possible that he went the other way."
The Mysterious Figure and Hiker Accounts
Pua had been sending his grandmother photos of the scenic route. One of the last images shows a dark shape that appears to be a man crouching in the undergrowth behind him. The discovery of this figure sparked intense online speculation, with many believing it could be linked to his disappearance.
Adding to the mystery, a group of hikers who were on the trail at the same time reported hearing a chilling cry for help. One Reddit user, Dclandry, recounted: "I could never explain to you the feeling I felt when you hear a cry like that... The wind died down for just a half a second and we hear a scream 'help me!'" The group contacted 911, and rescue teams reportedly heard further screams, including "I'm down here!" but could not pinpoint the source.
Search Efforts and Family's Belief
Search teams focused on a narrow ridge after the hikers' reports, but no trace of Pua was ever found. His family remains convinced that he was attacked and fell victim to foul play. Despite widespread media coverage and public interest, no one has ever come forward with information about the shadow man or any other suspect.
The case remains open, and the Haiku Stairs have since been closed permanently. The haunting image and the unanswered questions continue to captivate the public, leaving a decades-old mystery unresolved.
