Christian Brueckner, the prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, marked his release from prison by stopping at a McDonald's for a cheeseburger and chicken nuggets. The 48-year-old was pictured eating his first meal as a free man outside the fast-food restaurant in Buchholz in der Nordheide, northern Germany.
Brueckner, wearing a burgundy striped shirt and with dishevelled hair, went unnoticed by other diners. His pale appearance, due to years in solitary confinement, and an electronic ankle tag were the only clues to his past. He had been released from Sehnde prison after serving a seven-year sentence for raping a pensioner.
German prosecutors have named Brueckner as the prime suspect in Madeleine's disappearance in May 2007, but have not charged him. He denies any involvement. He was cleared last October of a string of sex crimes in Portugal, but prosecutors are awaiting an appeal against those verdicts.
Brueckner must wear the ankle tag for five years as part of his probation. He must also remain in monthly contact with a probation officer and inform them of any planned absences from his address. Breaching the conditions could result in a fine or up to three years in prison.
He is due to appear in court next month in Oldenburg, charged with insulting a prison officer. If convicted, he faces a fine.
